Software or hardware to crack copy protection is illegal and most video capture devices "play along", detect the copy protection, and scramble the video. They almost always come with audio-video capture software and in most cases it will be automatically converted to a compressed format, which isn't ideal if you want to edit.īut commercial video tapes were Copyguard Protected. Most video capture devices also capture audio. Most of these have XLR/TRS connectors, so you'd need an RCA adapter/cable. There are lots of higher-end audio interfaces with switchable mic/line inputs. That's not a big problem if you don't get clipping because you can boost after recording, but if you are clipping the analog-to-digital converter (in the interface) you need to reduce the analog level before it's digitzed. The Berhinger UCA202 is popular and inexpensive but it's lacking a recording level control. If you have a laptop with only microphone-in and headphone-out you'll need a USB audio interface with line in. You can use Audacity (audio recording and editing software). The sound is not a problem as long as you have a desktop computer with a regular soundcard and line-in. ![]()
